Thirty-five years ago Monday, the Chiefs found themselves down by two touchdowns to the New York Jets in the fourth quarter in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

But Steve DeBerg threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Carlos Carson and an 8-yard score to Emile Harry as the Chiefs rallied to tie the game 17-17. That’s how it ended as neither team scored in overtime.

New York missed a field goal in the extra period and lost a fumble at the Chiefs’ 11-yard line with under a minute left.

“We wanted a win on the road and I know the players are disappointed,” Chiefs coach Frank Gansz told the Kansas City Times afterward. “But I really feel we turned the corner with this ballclub.”

Times have changed and the Chiefs would certainly not be happy to come out of New Jersey with anything but a win in the “Sunday Night Football” game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

The pundits believe the Chiefs will win Sunday. Here is who 77 national experts are predicting will win the game, which kicks off at 7:15 p.m. and airs on NBC (KSHB Ch. 41 in KC).

A 26-10 Chiefs victory is the pick from Vinnie Iyer of the Sporting News. This is part of what he wrote: “Chris Jones has been huge in his return, but Kansas City is playing well on every level to make things so much easier on Patrick Mahomes. That pays off here as the Jets’ pass defense does its best to keep the team in the game — until Zach Wilson pulls New York right out of it.”

All eight writers at CBS Sports see the Chiefs winning: Pete Prisco, Will Brinson, Jared Dubin, Dave Richard, Ryan Wilson, John Breech, Tyler Sullivan and Jamey Eisenberg. Prisco predicts a 23-9 score. This is a snippet from his story: “The Jets can’t score and the Chiefs are playing outstanding defense. The Jets have a good defense, but Patrick Mahomes got it going last week. The Chiefs will win a tough road game.”

Picking the Chiefs are all seven Bleacher Report writers: Brad Gagnon, Gary Davenport, Maurice Moton, Wes O’Donnell, Dawson Knox, Ian Hanford and Brent Sobleski. Here is part of what was written about the Chiefs: “Kansas City started slow but demolished the Bears last week. Now that Travis Kelce is two games removed from injury, the offense looks more in sync. It would be one thing if the Jets were excelling outside of Wilson, but their defense has not been as dominant as last season, they’ve failed to run the ball successfully and the offensive line is a major weak spot. Kansas City wins this one by 10 or more.”

A Chiefs victory is the pick for all five NFL.com writers: Ali Bhanpuri (24-13 final score), Tom Blair (27-14), Brooke Cersosimo (27-14), Gennaro Filice (27-14) and Dan Parr (22-13). Here is an excerpt of what Parr wrote: “The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes and one of the best defenses in the NFL, which seems unfair to the rest of the league. Steve Spagnuolo’s unit ranks fourth in scoring defense and has a chance to hold a team to 10 points or fewer for the third week in a row. The Jets’ D can keep Mahomes from going off, but it won’t be enough for Gang Green to win.”

The Chiefs are picked to win by all seven NorthJersey.com writers: Art Stapleton (24-10), Bert Bainbridge (31-13), Dave Rivera (27-13), Vince Mercogliano (30-16), Brian Marron (34-10), Steve Edelson (24-7) and Chris Iseman (27-10). Here is what Iseman wrote: “The Zach Wilson Show rolls on and it isn’t pretty. I don’t see the Chiefs having much of an issue in this game. In case you haven’t heard, Taylor Swift may be there. The Jets might need her to play quarterback.”

The Chiefs will win, say the 12 writers at the Athletic: Chad Graff, Tashan Reed, Michael-Shawn Dugar, Ben Standig, Zack Rosenblatt, Josh Kendall, Zak Keefer, Austin Mock, Nick Kosmider, Zac Jackson, Larry Holder and Mark Kaboly. This is from that story: “Kansas City’s offense is coming off of a masterclass performance, routing the Chicago Bears 41-10 in Week 3. The Chiefs overwhelmed the Bears’ defense and the game was over before the third quarter was through, with Patrick Mahomes throwing three touchdown passes and contributing to a 153-yard effort on the ground. New York’s defense should prove to be a tougher challenge than Chicago’s, but the Jets’ issues on offense put even more pressure on their defense and some cracks have started to form on that side of the ball as well. They surrendered a total of 291 rushing yards in losses to the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots and didn’t generate a turnover in either game.”

The seven experts at Sports Illustrated see the Chiefs winning: Albert Breer, Mitch Goldich, Gilberto Manzano, Conor Orr, Matt Verderame, Claire Kuwana and John Pluym.

The Chiefs will cruise, say Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio (31-21 final score) and Chris Simms (30-16).

All eight experts at ESPN see the Chiefs winning: Matt Bowen, Mike Clay, Dan Graziano, Kimberly Martin, Moses Moody, Jason Reid, Lindsey Thiry and Seth Wickersham.

A Chiefs victory is the prediction from 12 SB Nation writers: JP Acosta, James Dator, Debbie Emery, David Fucillo, Jeanna Kelly, Brandon Lee Gowton, Jared Mueller, Ricky O’Donnell, RJ Ochoa, Michael Peterson, Mark Schofield and Matt Warren.

Picking the Chiefs to win are the eight USA Today writers: Jarrett Bell (24-13 final score), Chris Bumbaca (24-13), Nate Davis (24-17), Safid Deen (27-13), Tyler Dragon (30-13), Victoria Hernandez (35-12), Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz (27-13) and Lorenzo Reyes (28-17).
