National Fried Chicken Day: Here are 5 places to check out in Greater Columbus

After a Fourth of July weekend spent grilling hot dogs and ribs, it's time for attention to other tasty treats — like fried chicken.

Wednesday marks National Fried Chicken Day, dedicated to those who can appreciate an order of deep-fried wings, a juicy chicken sandwich or the best breakfast-and-dinner combo around, chicken and waffles.

While national chains like KFC and Popeye's have special deals for the holiday, here are five places with ties to Greater Columbus where you can enjoy a chicken meal Wednesday or any day.

Hot Chicken Takeover began its life as a pop-up in 2014 and is quickly becoming the standard-bearer for Nashville-style hot chicken in the area. (A “cold” option is available for those who prefer their fried chicken with less of a kick.)

The chain has four Columbus-area locations, and two restaurants in the Cleveland area. Menu items include chicken wings and sandwiches, but customers can also order a whole bird if they wish!

New Southern comfort food restaurant Subourbon Southern Kitchen and Spirits is bringing crispy fried chicken, creamy mac n' cheese and savory seafood to the Northwest Side.

The new restaurant is owned by Patrick Marker and Jacob Hough and is located at 2234 W. Dublin Granville Road in Linworth. Subourbon offers classic dishes such as country fried chicken with gravy with green beans and mashed potatoes.

Shrimp Lips Seafood & Chicken

While Shrimp Lips is known for its shrimp, perch and catfish, the South Side eatery, located at 1622 Parsons Avenue also offers fried chicken on the menu.

The chicken is sold with fries in six-piece meals of wings ($12.99) or strips ($10.99). A recurring special that includes two crunchy-yet-tender breasts and two sides ($17.99) — like the greens and mac-and-cheese with a decadent, tangy sauce — merits a special visit, according to a recent report from G.A. Benton in the Dispatch.

The Korean fried chicken restaurant opened a ghost kitchen earlier this year at Columbus Food Hall, 1282 Essex Ave., north of Downtown Columbus.

"Mad Chicken is best known for its signature soy garlic chicken and unique Korean inspired dishes, such as kimchi fries, in addition to more traditional fare, such as wings, fries, salads and sandwiches, with a Korean-flavored twist," the restaurant stated at the time. Some of those items include the kimchi chicken sandwich and the scallion chicken, which consists of a deep-fried chicken breast with scallion, red onion and a mustard sauce.

Formerly Uncle Nick’s Greek Fried Chicken, the reimagined restaurant has two locations, in Grandview Heights and Pickerington. The Crispy Coop serves fried chicken both hot and mild, along with southern-style sides like cornbread. The dinner entrees cost around $12.
