National Hurricane Center tracking system that could become tropical depression

The season's next tropical system looks to be brewing in the eastern Atlantic, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

The system located southwest of Cabo Verde could become a tropical depression over the weekend or early next week.

Closer to the U.S., drenching downpours and locally gusty thunderstorms associated with a tropical disturbance no longer on the Hurricane Center's tropical outlook map are expected to move across parts of Florida through the end the week, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

The disturbance, currently located near the Bahamas, is forecast to drift to the west-northwest, bringing it to Florida today and Friday.

Residents from Florida to the Georgia coast could see drenching downpours and locally gusty thunderstorms into Friday, according to AccuWeather.

Forecasters also are watching three other tropical waves, including one in the Caribbean Sea.

The next named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season will be Emily.

What's out there and where are they?

  • Eastern tropical wave: A tropical wave is located several hundred miles to the southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands.

  • Tropical wave 1: A tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic is located northwest of Cabo Verde. It's moving west at 17 to 23 mph. Exact location: near 31W from 03N to 19N.

  • Tropical wave 2: A tropical wave in the western Atlantic is located east of the British Virgin Islands. It's moving west at 17 to 23 mph. Exact location: near 50W from 03N to 18N.

  • Tropical wave 3: A tropical wave in the central Caribbean is located between Cuba and Haiti. Exact location: 74W from 05N to 20N.

How likely are they to strengthen?

Eastern tropical wave: Conditions are expected to be favorable for gradual development of this system in a few days, and a tropical depression could form late this weekend or early next week while the system moves generally west-northwestward over the tropical Atlantic.

  • Formation chance through 48 hours: low, near 0 percent.

  • Formation chance through 7 days: medium, 40 percent.

Who is likely to be impacted?

It's too early at this time to determine if there will be any impact to the U.S. from the tropical waves.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared.
