National Ice Cream Day is July 17: Deals at 6 spots across metro Detroit

July is National Ice Cream Month and Sunday is National Ice Cream Day.

President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month to honor  America's favorite dessert. He also declared the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day.

In metro Detroit, here are a few deals to celebrate:

• Carvel Ice Cream: Small size cup or cone of the available soft serve ice cream only. Choose from vanilla, chocolate or twist. A metro Detroit Carvel location is at 41990 Ford Road, Canton.

• Cold Stone Creamery: A new offer will be added to Cold Stone Club Members on Sunday. Members receive $4 off $20 or more for purchases through the Cold Stone Creamery app. The offer is available starting Sunday through Thursday. Non-members can download the app and create an account to get the offer.  Online orders placed now through July 17 are eligible for free delivery. Cold Stone Creamery is also honoring the 110th birthday of  Oreo and will feature new creations with Oreo Crème Ice Cream now through August 30. For info go to coldstonecreamery.com.

• Daxton Hotel in downtown Birmingham: The hotel's Delights by Daxton ice cream pickup window will have a special treat for kids and adults. When you buy any item, you get a free kid cone. For adults, there's a Drunken Cherry Sundae ($12) featuring a vanilla and chocolate ice cream swirl with liqueur-infused cherries. It's topped with cherry chocolate ganache, a chocolate-covered cherry and gold flecks. Sunday hours are 1-4 p.m.

• Baskin-Robbins: The nationwide chain recently debuted Oreo s'more ice cream. To celebrate, Baskin-Robbins is offering $5 off any purchase of $15 or more from Sunday through Saturday. Customers should use the code BECOOLER at checkout for online orders. In stores, they can scan the Baskin-Robbins mobile app coupon during checkout. For more information, go to baskinrobbins.com.

• Dairy Queen: You'll get $1 off any dipped cone Sunday. The offer is available through the DQ app and at participating locations. Dipped cone varieties include Dairy Queen's iconic chocolate-dipped cone and its new Fruity Blast version, which features a fruity cereal-flavored dip.

• Insomnia Cookies: The national chain has opened a Detroit location on the Wayne State University campus, and has just launched its Cookies in Ice Cream line. There are eight varieties, including Caramellionaire (salted caramel cookies in salted caramel ice cream with caramel swirls) and Moon Tracks (peanut butter cup cookies in vanilla pudding-flavored ice cream). On Sunday, stores nationwide will offer a free scoop of ice cream to level up any in-store purchase or order for local delivery.
