National Lobster Day: pizza, tacos, grilled cheese and more

When most out-of-staters think of New England their first thought is seafood — usually lobster to be exact. Living on the coast we are spoiled to have this fresh delicacy at our fingertips whenever the craving should hit.

There is no shortage of everyone’s favorite crustacean on the SouthCoast which makes National Lobster Day on Sept. 25 an easy day to celebrate.

Although lobster rolls are usually the star of the show, these savory morsels that taste like the ocean appear on menus in a variety of dishes. Here are some Greater New Bedford spots dishing up lobster any way you like it:

Lobster Pizza

Two fan favorites combine together for the ultimate dish. Head to Village Pizza and Ice Cream to get your Lobster Pizza, chunks of lobster meat, olive oil and garlic, light cheese and an Alfredo drizzle sold at market price. For a fall special, they are also serving up their lobster roll with garlic bread and onion rings or fries for $22.50 on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Located at 760 Main Road, South Westport.

It is piled into a lobster shell and served with melted butter and a lemon wedge. For a hearty dinner get the Filet Mignon Oscar, a half-pound of tender filet mignon grilled with a perfect blend of seasoning, topped with chunks of lobster and creamy béarnaise sauce served with asparagus spears for $29.99. Your sandwich comes with toasted white bread, American cheese, and lobster for $18. You can also add lobster to any of their salads for $10.

It’s almost soup season and you have to check out the Lobster Bisque at Quahog Republic Whaler's Tavern. A bowl of warmth with a creamy base, the natural sweetness of the lobster, and a touch of sherry for $13 a cup and $22 a bowl. You can get it at 24 N Water St, New Bedford or it is sold commercially at a variety of stores.

For a lighter meal get the Lobster Lettuce Wraps at Bittersweet Farm, 438 Main Rd, Westport. Bite into fresh lobster salad in a bibb lettuce wrap with fresh summer slaw and sweet Asian chili sauce for $21. They also offer a Lobster Avocado Salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, sliced avocado, crisp bacon, fresh lobster salad topped with homemade avocado dressing, and grilled flatbread points for $26.
