More than 30 students in Sarasota County Schools were named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, according to a news release by school district Thursday evening. In Manatee, nine students were named semifinalists.

As semifinalists, the Sarasota and Manatee students are part of the top 1% of high school seniors in the country, according to the release. The National Merit Scholarship is based on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test taken the previous year when the students were juniors.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships that began in 1955, according to the release. More than 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT, the release said.
