National Sasquatch Day: Poconos drive-in theater hosting Bigfoot festival

Looking for the elusive-yet-legendary cryptid known as Bigfoot in northeastern Pennsylvania? Stop by the Mahoning Drive-In Theater Thursday and you're sure to get an eye-and-earful of this magnificent mammoth.

Teaming up with the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, the Mahoning Drive-In will host a 35 millimeter double feature showing of the classic family-friendly "Harry and the Hendersons" and "Bigfoot" on Oct. 20 as part of National Sasquatch Day.

"Reported sightings of a large, hairy, humanoid creature in and around the area of Seneca Road in Mahoning Township, Pennsylvania in recent weeks have surged. Seven feet tall and seemingly a loner, this creature bears a strong resemblance, from eyewitness testimony to the fabled Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch," a release from CCEDC states.

Like it weird? So do we:You may be more likely to see UFOs in the Stroudsburgs, Lords Valley than other areas of the Poconos

Before the sun sets and the screen lights up, the CCEDC will be running a Bigfoot Festival, open to all guests with a movie pass. Make sure to dress up in your favorite Sasquatch suit, as prizes and giveaways will be awarded to those who show up in style. If you happen to have some big feet of your own, participate in the Big Foot Contest. Think you can summon the legendary creature with a call? Try the Big Foot Calling Contest.

And if you happen to come hungry, get ready for some Sasquatch Stew, Big Foot Burgers and more that could easily satisfy your cryptid cravings.

After that, settle in to enjoy "Harry and the Hendersons," starring John Lithgow and Melinda Dillon as a mother and father who host a benevolent Bigfoot in their home after a chance encounter in the wild, and enjoy all the hairy hijinks as they try to keep their guest secret.

Things will get a little darker in the next feature, the 1970 film "Bigfoot," starring John Carradine, Joi Lansing, Doodles Weaver, Christopher and John Mitchum, and Haji, when a creepy cryptid kidnaps women who can only be rescued by a band of bold and brave bikers.

Gates at the drive-in will open at 6 p.m., with a showtime set for sundown. Tickets are available at $8 for general admission, and $16 for an overnight pass. The event will run rain or shine, with no refunds or transfers.

A portion of the event's proceeds will go to the CCEDC to aid in their mission of boosting local businesses, "and aiding in the fight against Sasquatch slander."
