National Signing Day: Top player in Louisiana signs to LSU football team

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The LSU Tigers football team welcomes a top prospect to its signing class Wednesday.

Head coach Brian Kelly talked about February’s class and new additions to the team during a news conference on National Signing Day.

The top prospect signed is five-star defensive lineman Dominick McKinley from Acadiana High School. Kelly said the top-rated athlete is ranked No. 13 nationally and No. 3 at his position.

LSU Athletics said McKinley recorded 71 tackles, 15 quarterback hurries, and 11 tackles for loss for the 11-3 Rams as a senior.

“Adding Dominick to this class really tops it off for us,” Kelly said. “He’s the top player in the state of Louisiana and we are excited about him joining our program.”

The Tigers have signed eight of the top 10 players and 12 of the top 15 players in the Class of 2024 in Louisiana, the athletics department said.

In the early signing period in December, the LSU football program signed 27 players. Six players were added from the transfer portal, Kelly said. Those players include AJ Swann, CJ Daniels, Zavion Thomas, Jardin Gilbert, Jyaire Brown and Austin Ausberry.

“It’s very strategic when looking at the (transfer) portal,” Kelly said. “We looked at it in terms of fit and need, but fit first. We are going to develop and build this program with high school players and then be very strategic with the portal.”

The LSU football team will begin spring practices on Tuesday, March 5. The National L Club Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 inside Tiger Stadium. LSU Athletics said the kickoff time will be announced later.
