National Signing Day: Here are the Section V standouts headed to play college football

(The name of Irondequoit senior Azavier Ross was misspelled the first time this article was published.)

National Signing Day was Feb. 1 and high school football players plan to celebrate their commitments to colleges with family members, coaches, teammates and classmates in the coming weeks.

Players who receive an offer to play on scholarship at schools in the NCAA Division I and Division II levels have until April 1 or Aug. 1 to sign national letters of intent to join their future teams.

There are six college signing days, which are really signing windows, three in football alone. The big day for athletes in sports besides football and basketball was Nov. 9, opening a period to sign that closes Aug. 1.

The popularity of college football makes this signing period the one with the most hoopla.

Here are high school players in Section V, who have announced they have signed, or in the case of Pittsford receiver Jackson Green, committed.

Green is headed to Princeton University which plays in the Ivy League and, like the rest of the conference, does not offer athletic scholarships.

  • Tysheed Crockton: He will join the team as a receiver after he finished with 1,618 all-purpose yards last season at Canandaigua. He was named to the Class A all-state fifth team as a defensive back.
