National Weather Service advises swimmers about Lake Erie rip currents on Monday

The National Weather Service is advising people in Erie County not to enter Lake Erie waters Monday afternoon due to the possibility of rip currents.

A beach hazards statement was issued Monday morning by the NWS and remains in effect through 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Wind and wave action along the Lake Erie shoreline in Erie County will cause rip currents, which could be strong enough to carry swimmers away from shore.

"Swimmers should not enter the water," NWS officials said in the statement.

Matt Greene, Presque Isle State Park's operations manager, said swimming is permitted Monday at the park's guarded beaches. Lifeguards have posted yellow flags, which indicate that people should use extra caution because additional hazardous conditions may exist.

"I saw the weather service used stronger words than usual in their statement but the conditions aren't any different from what we typically see with these pop-up storms this time of year," Greene said. "We have reduced the swimming areas and posted a lifeguard near the shore at each beach."
