National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado blasted 100 to 110 mph winds in Weymouth

An EF-1 tornado touched down in Weymouth Friday morning, blasting winds over 100 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

The tornado touched down near the area of Pleasant and Torrey Streets where it uprooted and snapped several trees, the NWS said.

A home at the intersection of Burton Terrance and Torrey Street had about 20 shingles torn from its roof and a three-inch thick tree branch was picked up and thrown two feet into the ground by winds between 100 and 110 miles per hour.

The tornado eventually lifted near a water tower at the end of Lockewoods Drive.

Boston 25 viewer Paul Lydon shared photos of a tree uprooted by the vicious winds that fell outside his father’s apartment complex in Weymouth.

David Keefe sent video of roofing at a Weymouth outlet mall gusting and flapping in the high-velocity winds.

Mansfield and North Attleboro were also left to deal with a trail of destruction after a tornado ripped through the community. Elm and Otis streets in Mansfield saw significant damage. A giant tree was torn out of the ground on Elm Street and another tree slammed onto the roof of a home on Otis Street. Drone video from Plantingfield Road showed clusters of downed trees as crews begin cleanup work.

More survey teams are assessing damage in other nearby towns as well as Rhode Island. Several Bay State communities were impacted as powerful storms packing hail, lightning, downpours, and strong wind pushed from south to north across the state.

As the storms wreaked havoc on the region, one of multiple tornado warnings was issued and then extended in Norfolk County, where trees were uprooted in Stoughton.

There have also been confirmed tornados along the Foxboro/Easton line, in Mattapoisett, in North Brookfield, and in Dublin, New Hampshire, this summer.
