National Weather Service reports ‘thundersnow’ in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – As snow pummels the St. Louis region, it’s also arrived with a winter weather phenomenon known as “thundersnow.”

The National Weather Service confirmed a report of thundersnow Friday afternoon in south St. Louis. It’s characterized by the occurrence of thunder and lightning during a snowstorm.

Thundersnow is typically associated with intense snowfall rates. It usually happens around the same atmospheric conditions that produce non-winter thunderstorms, but with the presence of cold air and snow instead of rain.

During times of thundersnow, people may also notice heavy snowfall, reduced visibility, strong winds or weather hazards associated with regular thunderstorms.

So far, the FOX 2 weather team has confirmed anywhere from 1 to 4 inches for much of the St. Louis area, with places in St. Charles and Warren counties especially impacted.
