Jacksonville area could see snow Friday night into Saturday
Onslow County and the surrounding area could see snow this weekend.
Although some forecast uncertainty remains, snow is definitely a likelihood in Eastern North Carolina and in coastal areas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
In its latest briefing Thursday, NWS Newport/Morehead City said rain could turn to snow after 10 p.m. Friday and continue into Saturday with hazardous road conditions a possibility through Saturday night due to low temperatures.
In Jacksonville, snow isn't expected to start until after midnight, but could continue through Saturday morning.
NWS predicts a 35% chance of at least an inch of snow in Jacksonville and a 10% chance of three inches.
"If all ingredients align perfectly, significantly higher snowfall amounts are still possible," NWS stated in its Thursday morning briefing.
Counties north of Onslow into the Kinston and Greenville areas will have a higher chance of snow accumulation.
Unlike last weekend, freezing rain is not expected to be an issue; however, snow accumulation on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses and black ice is possible Saturday night.
“We are expecting sort of a more pure transition from rain to snow,” said meteorologist David Glenn on Wednesday.
