National Weather Service: Two more twisters hit South Jersey

WESTAMPTON - The National Weather Service has confirmed two more tornadoes hit South Jersey during powerful thunderstorms on Saturday evening.

The Weather Service said Tuesday it had confirmed a tornado traveled 2.8 miles between Crosswicks, Burlington County, and Upper Freehold, Monmouth County. Another tornado traveled nine-tenths of a mile near Mays Landing in Atlantic County.

Tornadoes at 100 mph slammed South Jersey

Both twisters had top winds of 100 mph, grading them as EF-1, or relatively weak tornadoes. The Weather Service previously said an EF-1 tornado traveled six miles through Cinnaminson, Delran and Moorestown. That tornado, which started at 6:59 p.m. and lasted six minutes, had a maximum width of about 600 yards. The Crosswicks tornado, which developed around 7:08 p.m., had a maximum width of about 300 yards.

Twister leaves Burlington County

It moved east just north of Ellisdale Road, snapping and uprooting trees, then entered a wooded area along Crosswicks Creek. The tornado then moved through Hamilton, Mercer County, and stopped after crossing the border into Upper Freehold.

The Mays Landing tornado began at 7:42 p.m. and lasted about a minute. It had a maximum width of 110 yards. Additional details about the Mays Landing tornado were not immediately available. The Weather Service also said Palmyra and Riverton sustained damage from a straight-line wind around 7 p.m.

EF-2 tornadoes, with top wind speeds of 120 to 130 mph, struck in Howell and Sea Girt, Monmouth County, and in Jackson, Ocean County. An EF-1 tornado rumbled from Allentown to Cream Ridge in Monmouth County.

A tornado that killed a man in Bridgeville, Delaware, was an EF-3 twister with a top wind speed of 140 mph, the Weather Service said. It traveled 14.3 miles and reached a maximum width of 700 yards.
