Naugatuck High School placed in lockdown after student reports seeing a weapon in a backpack

Naugatuck High School was placed into lockdown on Wednesday afternoon after a student reported seeing a firearm in a backpack, police said.

The Naugatuck Police Department conducted an investigation that included interviews, a sweep of the school and the use of a specialized firearms detection canine.

According to police, no firearm was recovered and there were no arrests.

Police coordinated with school staff for a dismissal of students, and no injuries were reported, police said.

“As our community expects, incidents relating to weapons are responded to swiftly and with a significant deployment of police resources,” police said in a statement on Wednesday evening. “We thank school staff, students and the community for their efforts [in] seeing this incident to its conclusion.”
