U.S. Navy Band to perform at Hendersonville High

The United States Navy Band will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Hendersonville High School Auditorium.

The performance is free, but reservations are required by going to this link: https://usnavyband.ticketleap.com/2024-concert-band-hendersonville/ . The performance will include one song, John Phillips Sousa’s Washington Post March, performed with 10 students from Henderson County Public Schools, according to a news release.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake set

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Western North Carolina's annual Bowl for Kids' Sake, an annual fundraiser for the organization, has set times and dates for the event at counties in Western North Carolina. They are as follows:

  • Burke: 9 a.m.-5:45 p.m. March 2 at Valdese Parks and Recreation Center (312 Massel Ave. SW, Valdese).

  • Henderson/Polk/Transylvania: 11a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 2 at Tarheel Lanes (3275 Asheville Highway., Hendersonville).

  • Buncombe: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. March 9 at Sky Lanes (1477 Patton Ave., Asheville).

  • Haywood/Madison: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. March 16 at Sky Lanes (1477 Patton Ave., Asheville).

  • Macon/Jackson/Swain/Graham: 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 16 at Galaxy Lanes (347 Jackson Plaza, Sylva).

  • Cherokee: 9 a.m.-noon March 16 at UltraStar Multi-tainment Center at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort (777 Casino Drive, Murphy).

Teams of four to five bowlers can be formed online by registering at https://secure.qgiv.com/event/bfks2024. Bowlers are asked to raise donate $50 each. All proceeds benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of WNC.

Hendersonville receives Healthy Babies Bright Futures grant

The Healthy Babies Bright Futures’ Bright Cities program announced its latest round of grant funding for cities across the nation that are taking innovative and equitable steps to improving children’s health, and Hendersonville was one of three cities to receive a grant.

The awards, totaling $75,000, will be split between Hendersonville; Boulder, Colorado; and Lansing, Michigan, according to a news release. Below is a list of what each city plans to do with the grant:

Hendersonville partnered with the community-based organizations on a communitygarden revitalization project, including growing food using organic methods, conductingcooking classes, and providing hands-on educational experiences in the garden forneighborhood children.● Boulder will develop and implement a sharable communication campaign toleverage community environmental toxic chemical exposure studies so residents betterunderstand the impact of lawn chemicals on prenatal and early childhood exposure andhealthier alternatives.● Lansing will implement an adopted environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP)policy and create practical deliverables that other municipalities can use to foster EPP intheir communities.

Spring concert set for Hendersonville Community Band

Hendersonville Community Band will hold its spring concert "Spring Fever" at 3 p.m. March 3 in the Blue Ridge Conference Hall at Blue Ridge Community College. Tickets are $10, except for students, who are free.

According to a news release, Joel Helfand, well-known local saxophonist, will solo with the band, playing Radio Days (arranged by Thomas Reed), and Andrew Jimeson, the band director at Brevard High School, will conduct. HCB Associate Conductor Cole Hairston, director of bands at Brevard College, will conduct Eric Whitacre’s October. The band's principal conductor, Winford Franklin, will conduct several pieces.

Tore’s Home begins adult daycare pilot program

Tore’s Home has initiated an adult daycare pilot program in Flat Rock, according to a news release. The program called “Daily Respite Care” is being offered as a pilot program to test its level of acceptance.

If successful, Tore’s Home Daily Respite Care will be expanded with a goal of serving both Henderson and Transylvania counties.

“We hope this can be the start of a greater program over time. Our staffing is currently the best it has been since we started Tore’s Home 28 years ago, therefore our pilot program in Flat Rock is the first step in hopefully being able to expand our Daily Respite Care services to also meet the demands of our local community in Brevard," Tore Borhaug, president and owner of Tore’s Home, said in the release.

At present, room is available for six participants and is currently available 7 a.m.-5 p.m Monday-Friday. Those interested can call Tore’s Home at 828-697-7522.

League of Women Voters to host “Navigating Immigration Pathways to Legal Status“

The League of Women Voters of Henderson County will host a panel discussion titled “NavigatingImmigration Pathways to Legal Status“ from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 22 in theTrinity Room, St. James Episcopal Church, 766 N. Main St. in Hendersonville.

Attendees are welcome to bring lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided. Pisgah Legal Services Immigration Attorneys, Angie Peña and Leonel Gonzalez, will discuss their role in finding options for immigrants with specific or special needs. For more information please go to www.lwvhcnc.org.
