NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Sunday, February 28th

Yahoo Play of the Day – Julius Randle: New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 44.22 | DraftKings: 46.98

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 7.0% | FanDuel 21.2% | DraftKings 5.6%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $40 | FanDuel $8,900 | DraftKings $9,500

First-time All-Star Julius Randle played heavy minutes last night as the Knicks took care of business against the Pacers. This will be the third game in four nights for New York, though they did give several regulars in-game rest during Thursday’s stomping of Sacramento. Currently the Knicks are on a roll, having won nine of their last 12 games. With coach Tom Thibodeau at the helm, Randle is playing 36.4 minutes per game and setting career highs across the board as a result. We are getting about a 15% discount on tonight’s salary considering the matchup against a horrible Detroit squad. There is also a chance that Derrick Rose does not play tonight after seeing 37.5 minutes last night. Randle is an excellent passing big man, and he would see an uptick as a non-traditional facilitator if Rose sits.

Bradley Beal: Washington Wizards at Boston Celtics

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 45.25 | DraftKings: 46.71

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 1.2% | FanDuel 8.6% | DraftKings 5.9%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $44 | FanDuel $9,600 | DraftKings $9,600

Last night Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook led the Wizards to their seventh win in eight games. Both put up excellent fantasy outings against Minnesota, and they played 30 and 31 minutes, respectively, so they should be ready to rock tonight. This is a bonus play for Yahoo, as their salaries are pretty lofty on the other DFS sites. Beal leads the league in scoring with 32.8 points per game and usage rate. While this is not an easy matchup, Beal did drop 35 points on the Celtics to kick off this winning stretch for Washington.

De’Aaron Fox: Sacramento Kings vs. Charlotte Hornets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 48.17 | DraftKings: 49.7

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 25.4% | FanDuel 39.1% | DraftKings 28.1%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $38 | FanDuel $8,000 | DraftKings $8,600

Welcome to De’Aaron Fox Chalk Day! Rookie Tyrese Haliburton (calf) is out tonight which means heavy, heavy minutes for Fox. Over their last 10 games, Charlotte is playing at the third-fastest pace in the league, just ahead of Sacramento. It should be no surprise that this game currently has 237.5 projected point total. As the final game of the night, no tournament leads are going to be safe with this tilt casting a looming shadow.

Over his last 19 games, Fox has taken things to the next level. In this stretch he is averaging 36.3 minutes and 19.6 field-goal attempts. This has culminated in 25.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 8.6 assists and 1.5 combined blocks/steals. There is not much else to add other than make sure Fox is well represented on your rosters.

LaMelo Ball: Charlotte Hornets at Sacramento Kings

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 42.53 | DraftKings: 43.78

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 10% | FanDuel 29.2% | DraftKings 7.6%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $37 | FanDuel $7,600 | DraftKings $8,800

This is an interesting price point for rookie phenom LaMelo Ball. On FanDuel he is an insane value, on DraftKings he is a reasonable option, and he is a little spendy on Yahoo. Of course, there will be enough discount dandies on the latter two sites that we should not have much of an issue rolling with Ball. However, it will likely cost us one top-shelf play, which should still keep his popularity in check.

In his last 19 games, Ball has been sublime. In this stretch he is averaging 35.0 minutes per game, with 16.3 field-goal attempts, including 6.4 3-point attempts. In this stretch he has posted 20.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 2.0 combined blocks/steals. Devonte’ Graham is out, but Gordon Hayward should return which will give the Kings someone else to worry about. This season the Kings are allowing 118.4 points per 100 possessions, which is the worst in the league by over 2 points.

Good Value

Houston Rockets vs. Memphis Grizzlies

Once again Houston is going to be shorthanded. Victor Oladipo is out with a quad injury and of course DeMarcus Cousins is no longer with the Rockets. In the 16 games since returning from their teamwide shutdown, Memphis is allowing 115.3 points per 100 possessions, which is the eighth most in the league. They are also playing at an above-average pace-which is a departure from their pre-health-and-safety protocol timeout. Salary and position eligibility varies across the DFS sites, but John Wall and Eric Gordon stand out as the best options. After that we can look to Jae’Sean Tate and Danuel House. It looks like David Nwaba and Sterling Brown have been playing similar minutes again, though either could surpass the other in a “hot hand” situation, which increases their risk.

Risky Value

Phoenix Suns at Minnesota Timberwolves

The Suns are double-digit road favorites in Minnesota as the Timberwolves are back home after being routed in Washington Saturday night. While it is always risky predicting blowouts, this matchup does have the makings of one. The real question is, which Suns players would benefit from additional minutes if Phoenix has this game in hand by halftime? That, my friends, is where the risk comes into play.

We are still waiting on the status of Dario Saric (ankle), who was out on Friday. It would seem that whoever is in the starting lineup between Jae Crowder and Frank Kaminsky will at least approach 17 to 20 minutes of secure playing time. If Kaminsky comes off the bench, he is at risk of seeing 12 to 15 minutes. If Saric is in, he will chip away 15-ish minutes from the wings. Cameron Johnson is risky as well, though he is the most likely of this motley crew to see heavy fourth quarter run in mop-up duty.

Lastly, Cameron Payne is the direct backup for Chris Paul, so he really becomes dependent on a runaway victory to see the court for more than a dozen minutes. Tread lightly, as we likely will not have the starting lineup and/or news on Saric until after the wave of the four 8 o’clock games.

Yahoo Daily Fantasy Basketball Discount Dandies

  1. Cameron Johnson: PHX vs. MIN – $10

  2. Jordan McLaughlin and Jaylen Nowell: MIN at PHX- $10

  3. Duncan Robinson: MIA vs. MIN – $12

SuperDraft Daily Fantasy Basketball Picks

  1. De’Aaron Fox: SAC vs. CHA – 1.30x multiplier

  2. Kyle Lowry: TOR vs. CHI – 1.40x multiplier

  3. Bradley Beal: WAS at BOS – 1.20x multiplier

Final Thoughts on the Sunday, Feb. 28 NBA DFS Slate

Tonight the games are spread out with a one-hour gap between the first and second waves. We also have a rousing late-night hammer between the Hornets and Kings, with a 237.5 projected point total. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
