NBA Rookie of the Year betting: Paolo Banchero isn't a preferred choice of bettors' money so far

Three players are getting nearly 75% of the money bet on the 2022-23 NBA Rookie of the Year. And No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero isn’t one of them.

Banchero is the betting favorite for Rookie of the Year at +350 after he was surprisingly selected by the Orlando Magic with the top pick. Ten percent of bettors like Banchero at those odds, but the money wagered on the former Duke star makes up just 7.5% of the total handle at BetMGM.

Chet Holmgren, meanwhile, is getting the most money. Holmgren is the No. 3 favorite to win Rookie of the Year at +400 and is getting 17% of bets and 25.3% of the money. The No. 2 overall pick of the Oklahoma City Thunder wowed fans and teammates in his Summer League debut on Tuesday night. Holmgren had 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and also had seven rebounds and four assists in just 24 minutes in an easy win over the Jazz.

The only player getting more bets than Holmgren to win ROTY is the Pistons’ Jaden Ivey. And Ivey is getting far more bets too. Ivey (+600) has gotten nearly 38% of bets to win the award and those bets make up just over 22% of the handle. Ivey is set to play alongside Cade Cunningham in the Pistons’ backcourt as Detroit looks to build upon a promising 2021-22 season.

The Kings’ Keegan Murray is at +800 to win Rookie of the Year and is getting nearly 24% of the money wagered. Murray is getting the most big-money bets of any player as he’s tallied just 7% of wagers. There are clearly some sharp bettors intrigued by Murray’s immediate fit in Sacramento alongside D’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis.

The Rockets’ Jabari Smith Jr. is the No. 2 favorite to win Rookie of the Year at +375 and those odds are not enticing bettors in the slightest. Smith has gotten just 3% of bets and those bets make up 0.6% of the handle. Players like the Wizards’ Johnny Davis (+2500), the Pistons’ Jalen Duren (+3000) and Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe (+1600) have all received more money than Smith.
