NBA summer league: Here’s how former Kansas basketball players performed in Las Vegas

LAWRENCE — Kansas men’s basketball found itself well represented during this year’s NBA summer league action, with multiple former Jayhawks logging minutes for their respective organizations in the Las Vegas session.

David McCormack, Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun all just spent their final college seasons helping Kansas to a national championship, and now in the professional ranks saw McCormack with Minnesota, Agbaji with Cleveland and Braun with Denver. Marcus Garrett, who played for the Jayhawks from 2017-21, spent this summer league with Miami. Devon Dotson, who played for the Jayhawks from 2018-20, spent this summer league with Washington.

Agbaji and Braun were both first-round selections in the 2022 NBA draft, while McCormack, Garrett and Dotson all started their professional careers on the undrafted track. Exactly what’s in store for them all this upcoming NBA season, will be determined in time. But here’s a look at how each of them performed this month during summer league play:

David McCormack

McCormack appeared in four of Minnesota’s five games, with the Timberwolves going 2-2 in the four games he played and 2-3 overall. He averaged seven points and six rebounds per game, with his high of 10 points in his first game and high of nine rebounds in his second. He shot 12-for-28 (42.9%) from the field and 4-for-6 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.

Ochai Agbaji

Agbaji appeared in four of Cleveland’s five games, with the Cavaliers going 2-2 in the four games he played and 3-2 overall. He averaged 15 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals a game, with his high of 24 points coming in his third game and high of seven rebounds coming in his fourth. He shot 19-for-51 (37.3%) from the field, 12-for-32 (37.5%) from behind the arc and 10-for-11 (90.9%) from the free-throw line.

Christian Braun

Braun appeared in four of Denver’s five games, with the Nuggets going 2-2 in the four games he played and 2-3 overall. He averaged 11.8 points, six rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.3 steals and one block per game, with his high of 18 points coming in his first game and high of 12 rebounds coming in his third. He shot 17-for-56 (30.4%) from the field, 3-for-24 (12.5%) from behind the arc and 10-for-18 (55.6%) from the free-throw line.

Marcus Garrett

Garrett appeared in three of Miami’s five games, with the Heat going 1-2 in the three games he played and 2-3 overall. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game, with his high of 13 points coming in his first game and high of six rebounds coming in his third. He shot 6-for-19 (31.6%) from the field, 1-for-4 (25%) from behind the arc and 9-for-16 (56.3%) from the free-throw line.

The Miami Heat announced Saturday that Garrett had been signed to a two-way contract with the organization, but did not disclose the terms of the deal.

Devon Dotson

Dotson appeared in four of Washington’s five games, with the Wizards going 2-2 in the four games he played and 3-2 overall. He averaged 8.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game, with his high of 11 points coming in both his first and final games and high of six assists coming in his second. He shot 11-for-33 (33.3%) from the field, 2-for-9 (22.2%) from behind the arc and 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the free-throw line.
