These are the NC counties with the highest and lowest incomes. Do you live in one?

A recently published study is revealing the wealthiest counties in North Carolina and how each compares to others across the state.

Financial tech company SmartAsset compared and ranked all 100 counties in the state using data from property values, investment income, and per capita income.

While Mecklenburg County and Union County were among the wealthiest, others outside of the area fell lower on the list.

According to SmartAsset, Union County is the fifth wealthiest county in the state, with a median income of $88,465. The county, located about 30 miles outside of Charlotte, was formed in 1842. The area, which has had staggering growth over the last few decades, is home to 244,562 people.

Mecklenburg County ranked seventh, with an average income of $73,124. The county, established in the 1760s, is made up of one the state’s most populous metro areas, Charlotte, and six other municipalities. In the last year, Mecklenburg grew by 1.74% and now has a population of 1.145 million, making it the second-largest county in North Carolina behind Wake, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.

  2. Wake County: $88,741 median income

  3. Chatham County: $76,791 median income

  4. Dare County: $69,500 median income

  5. Union County: $88,465 median income

NC counties with the lowest incomes

  1. Robeson County: $36,736 median income

  2. Bertie County: $37,571 median income

  3. Washington County: $32,937 median income

  4. Northampton County: $39,764 median income

  5. Halifax County: $37,832 median income
