NC House District 14 primary: Isaiah Johnson defeats Eric Whitfield, heads to general election

A veteran and community mentor defeated an Onslow County school board member in the race for NC House District 14's Democratic primary.

Isaiah "Ike" Johnson won the spot with 943 votes, or 82.57% percent. He ran opposed to Onslow school board member Eric Whitfield, who received 199 votes or 17.43% percent.

Although Whitfield is a self-described "hard core Republican," who won the school board race as a Republican, he ran as a Democrat for the House.

Johnson will go up against incumbent George Cleveland in the general election.

All election results are unofficial until the All results are unofficial until the Onslow County Board of Elections vote canvass on May 27th.

The canvass ensures votes have been counted correctly and required audits have been completed. During the canvass, election officials consider challenges to votes and process provisional ballots and absentee ballots received after Election Day.

The canvass process is required by law and is held after every election, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
