Which NC schools have the top girls’ and boys’ prep basketball teams? Check our poll
Four new boys’ teams and three new girls’ teams join the North Carolina statewide high school basketball rankings from The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh.
This is the first regular-season poll of the season.
In the boys’ rankings:
▪ Myers Park holds onto the No. 1 spot in 4A, despite losing to nationally-ranked Combine Academy on Saturday. Combine, a boarding school in Lincolnton, does not compete in a state association and features players from multiple states.
▪ In 3A, Boiling Springs Crest, which is not scheduled to start its season until Dec. 8 against rival Shelby, moves into this week’s poll at No. 10.
▪ The 2A and 1A polls remained the same as in the preseason. Most teams have not started to play.
▪ In the NCISAA poll, which ranks teams from all classes, Charlotte’s Victory Christian is in at No. 3. The Kings have impressive wins against state power Provdence Day and reigning NCISAA 4A state champion Christ School in Arden. Also in this week’s poll are last season’s NCISAA 1A runner-up, Charlotte’s United Faith, and Davidson Day, which is off to a 3-1 start.
In the girls’ rankings:
▪ In 4A, Independence joins at No. 3. The Patriots, who welcomed back 2021-22 Southwestern 4A player of the year Kaylee Carson, won their season-opener 81-36 over West Cabarrus. Carson, an East Tennessee State recruit, had 18 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four assists. It was her first game back since she sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee on Sept. 1, 2022, months before her junior season began.
▪ One new team joined the 1A poll: Bear Grass Charter (1-0) at No. 8.
▪ United Faith, off to a 3-0 start, moves into No. 10 in the NCISAA poll.
