NC Special Olympics Summer Games open

The Special Olympics torch is shining brightly inside Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh this weekend.

The North Carolina chapter of the Special Olympics has kicked off its Summer Games.

The games bring athletes from all over the state together to compete in a variety of events from swimming to basketball and bowling.

More than 1,300 athletes are expected to compete this weekend with the help of more than 1,000 volunteers, according to ABC11 News.

This is the first full event to be held since 2019.

Swimmer Rebecca Ryan has been competing in these games since middle school. “It means a lot to me and I meet good friends,” Ryan said.

Jacob Huffman of Gaston County won a bronze medal in 2019 for volleyball.

He was in Raleigh to emcee an event on Saturday.
