RALEIGH — NC State head coach Dave Doeren said Monday that he expects to keep offensive coordinator Tim Beck in the press box for the immediate future after removing him from the sideline before Saturday's 55-3 win over Charleston Southern.

"He liked it," Doeren said. "He felt like he could see it, and it will be something we continue as a positive all the way around."

The sudden move came after a too-close-for-comfort Week 1 win against ECU in which the offense was held scoreless in the second half of a 21-20 victory.

"It's frustrating when you come in on a Sunday and you watch the film and you're like, 'Man, if I would've seen that I would've done something different,' " Doeren said Saturday. "I had another conversation like that last game, and I just said, 'That's enough. I'm not going to hear that anymore.' "

Doeren said Saturday that having Beck in the booth allows him to make the checks and audibles he wants and allows him "to have better eyes up there." Running backs and assistant coach Kurt Roper remained on the sideline as an intermediate between quarterback Devin Leary and Beck.

Instead of sideline conversations between series, Beck and Leary communicated via phone against Charleston Southern.

"It was different, for sure," said Leary, who completed 16 of 25 passes for 238 yards and had six total touchdowns in the win. "But every single series I was getting on the phone with him and we were still talking through everything like we always do. Just a little change-up, but I think it works either way."

No. 16 NC State finished with 538 total yards and 32 first downs on 82 total plays against Charleston Southern.

The Wolfpack (2-0) will host Texas Tech (2-0) at Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday (7 p.m., ESPN2). The Red Raiders are coming off a 33-30 double-overtime win over then-No. 25 Houston.
