These NC vacation spots are the best to take your dog this summer, pooch survey says

Some of the Carolinas’ most popular travel destinations are also among the best for vacationing with your pet, a new survey says.

Asheville finished sixth in the “100 Most Dog-Friendly Vacation Destinations in America” rankings, while the Outer Banks finished just outside the top 50, at 51st.

The study, put together by the dog breeders’ group EuroPuppy, is the result of surveying “3,000 dog-owning families to rate their preferred summer vacation destinations when traveling with their beloved pets,” per the company.

“In recent years, there has been a marked surge in pet owners searching for vacation options that not only cater to human comfort and adventure but also to the needs and enjoyment of their canine counterparts,” the group said. “Gone are the days when family vacations meant a sorrowful goodbye at the kennel’s door.”

Respondents praised Asheville for its “dog-friendly parks and green spaces where dogs can run and play freely.”

“Asheville itself is a pet-friendly city, with many shops, restaurants, and breweries welcoming four-legged visitors,” EuroPuppy said. “Families can enjoy leisurely walks through the vibrant downtown area, browse through local boutiques, and savor delicious meals at outdoor patios. Asheville also hosts numerous pet-friendly events and festivals throughout the year, providing entertainment and excitement for the whole family.”

The Outer Banks got high marks for its shoreline, where “families can enjoy long walks and play fetch with their furry companions along the dog-friendly beaches.”

“The area also features pet-friendly hiking trails and nature preserves, where families can explore the diverse coastal ecosystems and enjoy scenic views together,” EuroPuppy said, also praising the OBX for “its pet-friendly accommodations, ranging from cozy beach cottages to spacious vacation rentals, ensuring a comfortable stay for the whole family.”

Elsewhere in the region, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was ranked the most dog-friendly vacation spot in the U.S. in the survey. And Hilton Head, South Carolina, finished in fourth place.

Sarasota, Florida; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Amelia Island, Florida, rounded out the top five.
