NCAA penalizes Memphis basketball for recruiting violations during 2021-22

The Memphis basketball program committed recruiting violations during the 2021-22 academic year, according to an announcement made by the NCAA on Thursday.

The violations — which are separate from the ones attached to the recently resolved IARP case — involved in-home visits with a prospect before the appropriate recruiting period based on that prospect's year in high school, according to an NCAA press release.

As such, penalties have been levied against Memphis: The program has received one year of probation (on top of the three years' probation from the IARP punishment), a two-week ban on all communications related to recruiting, a reduction of in-person recruiting days by four, the loss of two official visits, and a $5,000 fine.

The NCAA did not identify which member of the Tigers' staff is responsible for the violations, but it did announce "one individual in the case has contested the alleged violations, and his portion of the case will be considered by the Committee on Infractions during an infractions hearing before the release of the committee's full decision."

That decision also will include findings and penalties for the individual who has contested the violations, according to the NCAA's press release.

The NCAA indicated it will not comment on the matter until the Committee on Infractions releases its full decision.

In a prepared statement, the university acknowledged violations occurred and that it has worked with the NCAA to negotiate a resolution.
