Xavier Musketeers survive NCAA Tournament upset bid by Kennesaw State | Replay

GREENSBORO, N.C. – It took every second and a late comeback for Xavier to survive Kennesaw State 72-67 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Trailing 61-48 with 9:57 left, Xavier needed a 15-0 run to storm back into the game.

Over that run, Xavier held Kennesaw State scoreless from the 9:57 mark until the 3:46 mark.

Jerome Hunter, who led Xavier with 24 points, Colby Jones, Souley Boum and Jack Nunge made the most of their opportunities on offense, hitting big shot after big shot, but the biggest shot was from Adam Kunkel.

With Kennesaw State leading 65-64 with 1:44 left, Kunkel buried a 3-pointer to give the Musketeers a 67-65 lead.

Xavier was 2-for-12 from beyond the arc.

After a Kennesaw State layup tied the game, 67-67, with 1:23 left, Xavier ran a set play to Jones, whose first shot was blocked, but he stayed with it and drew a questionable foul call on his second attempt.

Jones went to the line and gave Xavier a 68-67 lead with 16 seconds left.

On Kennesaw State's final possession, Nunge blocked a shot at the rim in the closing seconds. Boum collected the loose ball and went to the line to seal the game.

Xavier advances to the second round against the winner of Iowa State and Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Over that span, the Musketeers have put together a 15-0 run to retake the lead.
