NCAA Tournament selection committee shows major respect to Kansas State women’s team

If the postseason started tomorrow, there’s no doubt that the Kansas State women’s basketball team would be playing in the NCAA Tournament.

We even know what seed the Wildcats would get and where they would play their first game.

The NCAA Tournament selection committee unveiled its first top 16 rankings of the season on Thursday, and K-State checked in at No. 16. That means the Wildcats are on pace to earn a No. 4 seed in March Madness and host a sub-regional at Bramlage Coliseum.

That would be a big deal.

K-State (15-5, 5-3 Big 12) was ranked No. 25 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll, so its inclusion in the selection committee’s top 16 came as a bit of a surprise. But there are plenty of reasons to be high on Jeff Mittie’s team.

The Wildcats own impressive conference victories over Baylor and Oklahoma, as well as solid nonconference wins over South Dakota State and Oregon.

Ayoka Lee is also their star player. The junior center is averaging a whopping 25.3 points and 10.9 rebounds this season. She recently broke the NCAA scoring record by dropping 61 points on the Sooners. She is a national player of the year candidate.

The Wildcats are coming off a road loss against Texas, but they will look to bounce back against TCU on Saturday at home.

Motivation shouldn’t be a problem in that game or any other coming down the stretch. The K-State women know what rewards will come their way if they keep winning.
