NCAA Women’s Regionals: Still no golf in Baton Rouge

College golf’s championship season rolls on to regionals this week, with the women first to play.

The four regional championship sites each feature 18 teams and six individuals (72 teams and 24 individuals, total), with play beginning Monday, May 10 and ending Wednesday, May 12. The top six teams (24 total) and the low three individuals (12 total) not on a qualifying team from each regional will advance to the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 21-26.

Below you’ll find recaps for Tuesday’s second rounds, as well as a breakdown of what to watch for from each regional as play concludes from all four sites.

Baton Rouge Regional

For the second consecutive day, not one shot has gone in the air at University Golf Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Rain made the course unplayable on Monday, and officials delayed the start of the event to Tuesday at 10 a.m., at which point teams were scheduled for a shotgun start. That plan changed quickly, too, as heavy rains made conditions even worse at University Club. The start of the round was delayed until noon (with lightning also being a factor), and shortly after, play was canceled for all of Tuesday, too. According to the NCAA Participant Manual, if 54 holes cannot be completed – which looks more than unlikely at this point – the committee will advance teams according to a 36-hole score. It’s also a possibility that advancement could be determined by just 18 holes. If no golf is played, the original seeding of teams in the field would be used for selection to the NCAA Women’s Championship. Per the manual, play cannot extend past Wednesday. Golfweek attempts to contact on-site NCAA representatives have been unsuccessful. Should teams advance by their seed, the top six teams out of the Baton Rouge Regional would be host LSU, Ole Miss, Baylor, Oregon, Maryland and Alabama. https://twitter.com/kenziewgolf/status/1392117745991491591
