NCAA Wrestling Championships, Day 2 recap: Iowa 2nd; Woods, Carr, Keckeisen, Sloan in finals

TULSA, Okla. — The 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships continued Friday night here at the BOK Center, with the semifinals and bloodround matches. All wrestlers who advanced to Saturday are All-Americans.

The biggest news of the day was Iowa's Spencer Lee losing his semifinal match at 125 pounds, ending his quest to become the first Hawkeye to win four NCAA titles.

Iowa ended Friday in second place overall, with 77 points. Six Hawkeye wrestlers earned All-American honors, but only one made the finals: Real Woods (141). The other five — Lee (125), Max Murin (149), Nelson Brands (174), Jacob Warner (197), Tony Cassioppi (285) — all remain alive for third place.

Iowa State climbed into the top-10 thanks to two All-Americans. David Carr made the NCAA finals at 165 pounds and Marcus Coleman rallied from a quarterfinal loss to win twice in the wrestlebacks to reach the top-six at 184 pounds. The Cyclones will enter Saturday in 8th place with 44 team points.

Northern Iowa has a finalist in 184-pounder Parker Keckeisen, the program's first since Drew Foster won an NCAA title at the same weight in 2019. Keckeisen is the only All-American for the Panthers, who will enter Saturday in a tie for 15th overall in the team race, with 29 points.

Penn State all but clinched the team title, racking up 116.5 team points thanks to five finalists and three more All-Americans. The Hawkeyes pulled away in what was a heated battle for second. Cornell sits third, with 64 team points, followed by Ohio State (4th, with 64) and Missouri (5th, 55).
