NCIS: Los Angeles is going out with a bigger bang than we previously expected.

It was believed that the long-running police procedural drama would be airing its final ever episode on Sunday, May 14. However, it has now been confirmed (via Deadline) that the finale will be a two-part affair and wrap up with an extra episode airing on Sunday, May 21.

But that's not all, an Entertainment Tonight special titled A Salute to NCIS: Los Angeles will drop at some point after the last ever episode, and look back at the programme's 14 years on the air. There will be new interviews with the cast, alongside a load of archive footage to take fans behind the scenes.

The two-parter will be called 'New Beginnings, Part 1' and 'New Beginnings, Part 2', respectively, and see the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) call in the team in to deal with a case regarding stolen military-grade weapons.

Meanwhile, there's a wedding, a drugs test and a university interview, plus a load of stuff that hasn't been teased yet.

Speaking about the two-parter and TV special news, showrunner and executive producer R Scott Gemmill is quoted as saying: "Wrapping up a series is always bittersweet. We were blessed to have 14 seasons together, so bringing it to a satisfying end was extremely challenging after so many years.

"Fortunately, CBS was gracious enough to give us an extra episode in order to send off our characters in a way befitting their stories that hopefully the fans find both satisfying and hopeful."

With that extra episode being commissioned, NCIS: Los Angeles will bow out with over 320 aired episodes under its belt. If you want to start from the beginning before the finale, you've got your work cut out for you.

NCIS: Los Angeles airs on CBS in the US and on Sky Max in the UK.
