Former NCIS star Michael Weatherly has teased he could return to the show with his latest social media post.

The actor, who played Tony DiNozzo in the long-running CBS drama from 2003 to 2016, recently shared an image of himself receiving a slap from a pool lifeguard.

"Getting the DiNozzo/Gibbs slap from a friend. #lifeguard #ncis," he wrote in the caption.

In the series, Mark Harmon's character Leroy Jethro Gibbs would affectionately slap his colleagues on the head — and fans are convinced that Weatherly's cryptic tweet could see him return to the show.

Weatherly's latest social media post isn't the first time he has hinted at a possible comeback. On New Year's Day 2023, the star alluded to a potential on-screen reunion between himself and Cote de Pablo, who played his love interest Ziva David.

Taking to Twitter, Weatherly wrote: "Happy New Year! It's time to look at time and enjoy the moment!" This prompted one of his followers to respond: "We all would rather look at you and Ziva reuniting and enjoying that moment."

Michael was quick to reply, writing: "Stay tuned... for this might be an interesting year for such moments!"

After his exit following the series' season 13 finale in 2016, Weatherly said: "It came about at the right time. I was burnt out by NCIS and I was ready for a new challenge. Sometimes change is as good as a rest."

At the time, Weatherly also revealed to TV Insider that he began to think about his exit after de Pablo left the show in season 11.

"Their great dynamic, the badinage and sparring and flirting between those two characters and how they would swing from siblings to near lovers and back to buddies, that was gone," he explained. "Then, I got to the point where I felt I'd stayed at the party for too long."

Based on his recent Twitter activity, perhaps Weatherly is considering returning to the party. Only time will tell.

NCIS airs on CBS in the US. Seasons 1-20 are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
