NCT’s Jeno teams with designer Peter Do to become first K-pop artist to open New York Fashion Week runway show

NCT’s Jeno became the first K-pop artist to open a runway show at New York Fashion Week, thanks to Vietnamese American fashion designer Peter Do.

Do previously styled fellow NCT member Johnny for the 2022 Met Gala, but this is the first initiative from SM Entertainment at the iconic annual fashion event in New York City. Scheduled for Sep. 13, Jeno will help highlight Do's Spring/Summer 2023 collections.

The collection’s theme centers around time. Personalized invitations came in the form of memory boxes. Presented in a cookie tin, some of the items included were an SM-branded disposable camera, a CD mix featuring SM artists Do grew up listening to, a recipe from Do’s late father and a note from Do about SM Entertainment’s influence on his life.

“There’s the nostalgia of listening to Girls’ Generation songs on the bus on my way to school. When we started the brand, we were listening to Red Velvet on repeat while building studio furniture,” Do said in a press release.

Elaborating on the decision to work with SM Entertainment and Jeno, Do said, “It was a natural choice to have Jeno open the show. Jeno embodies the Peter Do man — multifaceted, confident, and a trailblazer.”

He went on to liken the drive of K-pop artists to fashion creatives: “I have so much respect for these artists because there is so much time put into their craft that people simply don’t see. Few realize the intensity of what is happening behind the scenes to achieve the end product; it’s very similar to fashion so I identify with that process very much. As a brand forging its own path in the industry, we are proud to partner with the leading global player in K-pop to help write the future of fashion.”

Red Velvet’s Seulgi will be in attendance as a guest of honor ahead of her first solo debut, “28 reasons,” next month. SM trainees Shohei and Eunseok will also make their New York Fashion Week debut by walking the show.
