ND-WB's Allen, Mount Pleasant's Matheney advance to Class 3A golf district

Notre Dame-West Burlington's Kaleb Allen and Mount Pleasant's Nick Matheney finished second and fifth in the Class 3A boys golf sectional at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course Wednesday and both earned berths in the district tournament.

Solon won the team title with just 293 strokes and Washington was second at 325. Both advance to the district meet Monday at Wildcat Golf Course at Shellsburg.

Solon's Mac McCarty was medalist with a one-over 71. Allen and Washington's Roman Roth tied for second with 72s and Matheney and Solon's Jack McCarty tied for fifth with 74s.

Allen and Matheny advance to district because they were the top two individuals not on an advancing team.

Clear Creek-Amana was third in the team scores with a 329 and was followed by Mount Pleasant (330), Fairfield (350), Fort Madison (351), ND-WB (357) and Keokuk (377).

Joining Matheny for Mount Pleasant were Reece Kempker (81), Ian Hake (87) and Reece Coffman (88).

Also playing for Notre Dame-West Burlington were Carsen Jones (92), Chase Richards (95) and Kody Allen (98).

Tyler Wade led Fort Madison with an 81. Other Bloodhounds: Brady Wade (84), Brennen Ulik (93) and Emmett Kruse (93). Jordan Sisk paced Keokuk with an 88. Other Chiefs: Nick Profeta (94), Jaydan Thonas (97) and Bryor Lindner (98).

MEDIAPOLIS ADVANCES 3: Three Mediapolis players earned berths in the district tournament through their play in the Class 2A sectional at Tipton Country Club.

Advancing teams are West Branch, which won the sectional with a 309, host Tilpton (316) and Iowa City Regina (345).

Mediapolis was fourth in the team score at 355 and was followed by Durant (371), Wilton (373) and Mid-Prairie (395).

Tipton's Bob Ryan was medalist with an even-par 72 and his teammate Tristin Sorgenfrey was runner-up with a 74. Regina's Mikey Takacs was third at 75 and West Branch's Gage Gingerich finished fourth individually with a 76.

Individuals advancing are Jacob Grier (87), Ben Wolter (88) and Kamden Stotlar (88) of Mediapolis, Mid-Prairie's Warren Scarff (88) and Wilton's Nolan Townsend (88).

Grant Hilton completed the Mediapolis team score with a 92.

Louisa-Muscatine didn't have enough players for a team score. Playing for the Falcons were Xander Bieri (93), Gavin Hunt (110) and Braeden Van Auken (112).

VBC's BRUCKMAN ADVANCES: Van Buren County's Riley Bruckman carded a 79 at Gateway Recreation Golf Course in Monroe and earned a berth in Monday's district tournament.

Albia won the sectional with a 319 and Pella Christian was second with a 326. Both advance to Monday's district at Lincoln Valley Golf Course, hosted by West Marshall High School.

PCM's Grant VanVeen, who carded a 76, and Bruckman advance to the district meet as individuals.

Pella Christian's Eliot Menninga was medalist with a 73.

TIGERS, WAPELLO ADVANCE: New London and Wapello both advance to the district golf tournament after finishing second and third in the sectional at Deerwood Golf Course in New London.

Keota won the sectional team championship with a 356. New London was second at 365 and Wapello was third with a 383. All three advance to Monday's district at Pleasant Valley golf course in Iowa City, hosted by Winfield-Mount Union.

Winfield-Mount Union finished fourth at 392, Columbus was fifth with a 443 and Holy Trinity was sixth at 512,

W-MU's Carter Loyd and Jake Edwards both carded 93s and advance to the district.

Weston Miller led New London with an 85. Other Tigers: Mason Cole Shelledy (91), Ethan Streeter (92) and Wyatt Miller (97). Casey Short led Wapello with a 91 and was followed by teammates Zach Harbison (93), Cooper Garrison (97) and Dawson Tipps (102).

Following Loyd and Edwards for W-MU were Andrew Brown (96), Nick Crow (110) and Griffin Humphreys (110). Robert Coil led Columbus with a 103 and was joined by teammates Cole Storm (104), Grant Watson (112) and Ryan Coil (129). Tyler Snaadt led Holy Trinity with a 107. Other Crusaders: Cody Briggs (133), Blake Hemann (136) and Andy Mehmert (136).

GIRLS TENNIS

GRAYHOUNDS OUSTED: Burlington High School failed to advance any players out of the Class 2A regional tournament at Eldridge.

Iowa City Liberty's Ella Gilbert won the singles title, beating Cedar Rapids Washington's Mya Messenger, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals. Washington's Kathryn Zylstra and Katelynn Kock won the doubles title, topping Liberty Wickham and Chloe Palmer, also of Washington, 6-0, 6-1, in the finals.

Burlington's Emily Woodsmall beat Dubuque Senior's Lacey King, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round, then fell to Liberty's Leela Strand, 6-1, 6-0. Macy McGinity of Burlington beat Davenport North's Katie Kieu, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round, then lost to Liberty's Gilbert, 6-0, 6-0.

The Burlington doubles team of Emma Coffin and Grace Hecox won their first-round match, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, over Hanna Mozena and Kaitlyn Blasen of Dubuque Senior, then lost to Liberty's Olivia Davenport and Lucy Lohman, 6-1, 6-1.

Liberty's Brooke Hildreth and Sarah Roe ousted Burlington's Emily Mosley and Jacqui Workman, 6-6 (5-7), 6-0, 13-11, in the first round.

PANTHER DUO TAKES 3rd: Mount Pleasant's doubles team of Savana Walls and Melanie Olivas finished third in the Class 1A regional tournament at Fairfield.

Walls and Olivas beat Maharishi's Valls and Valls, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, in the third place match. Walls and Olivas advanced by beating Centerville's Sconzo and Williams, 6-2, 6-3, and Keokuk's Brittney Kelly and Olivia Rule, 6-3, 7-5. They lost to Assumption's Bush and Sons, 7-5, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Assumption's Alllison Halligan and Ella Dilulio won the doubles championship and the Knights' Mary Rolfstad was the singles champion.
