Nearly 2 months after attack that cost GA woman part of leg, judge orders dog to be put down

The dog who authorities said mauled a Georgia woman to that point that she needed part of her leg amputated, has been ordered to be euthanized.

Kim Golden was brought to Grady Memorial Hospital for her injuries after the dog attacked her on March 1 in Columbus. Golden works for a nonprofit that finds housing for people in need.

She was with another co-worker checking out a property when the dog attacked her. Her injuries were so severe that part of her left leg had to be amputated.

Following a Muscogee County Superior Court hearing Wednesday, WTVM-TV reports that the dog named Cowboy has been ordered to be put down.

“If I could take it back and reverse it I would, but I don’t think my dog’s getting the right treatment. I don’t think I am getting the right treatment,” the dog’s owner Edward Murray told the TV station following the hearing.

Murray has claimed since the incident happened that Golden was trespassing on his property, and Cowboy was doing his job to protect.

“I’m truly sorry it happened to Ms. Golden, but it happened for a reason -- it had to. Don’t nothing happen for a reason. It could be for me to learn how to protect the public and my dog. It could be for Ms. Golden to slow down on something else. I don’t know. I’m not God but it did happen for a reason,” Murray told WTVM.

“Even if a person were to step on the property line, the end result shouldn’t be that a dog bites and latches on to a person’s body for two minutes,” Judge John Martin said during the hearing.  “It’s not a question whether you love the dog or if it’s a good dog or bad dog, it’s about what the dog did.”

“It’s going to be a great loss, but I have made peace, I’ve made peace,” Murray said.

Once the order has been filed, Cowboy will be put down. Murray and his wife are expected to be back in court on May 3.
