On October 27, Johnson Health Tech Trading issued a recall for about 199,000 Horizon Fitness folding treadmills that were sold in the U.S. and Canada. The company has received hundreds of reports of treadmills unexpectedly changing speed or stopping, posing a fall hazard to users.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice states that Horizon has received at least 874 reports of treadmills unexpectedly changing speed or stopping. There have been 71 reports of injuries as a result of these incidents, including bruises, abrasions, and two broken bones.

The affected models are T101-05 folding treadmills made in China and Vietnam, with serial numbers starting with TM734 and TM486. They were sold between March 2018 and October 2022.

The T101 treadmill is included in our treadmill ratings. However, CR last tested this treadmill before affected models were sold. Our engineers did not experience this issue while evaluating the machine in our labs, though it is not a recommended model.

If you own one of the affected models within the specified serial code ranges, you should immediately stop using it and contact Horizon (contact info below). The company will send you a USB flash drive with a software repair to install to remedy the issue at no cost to you.

Horizon Fitness did not respond to a request for comment, and did not answer questions about when the company first received reports of these incidents or injuries.

The CPSC also did not respond to a request for comment.
