Nearly 33,000 in Doña Ana County voted early; here's what to know if voting on Election Day

LAS CRUCES - Voters in Doña Ana County have been submitting ballots since early October. That's when sites opened for early voting and when election officials began mailing absentee ballots. The final day to cast a ballot in person or drop off your absentee ballot will be Tuesday, Nov. 8 — Election Day.

In this general election, voters will select representatives in the state legislature, county sheriffs and commissioners, judgeships, federal officers and the governor. Voters will also decide the fate of three proposed amendments to the New Mexico Constitution, as well as general obligation bonds at the municipal and state levels.

Here's what's on the ballot for Doña Ana County voters.

Early absentee and in-person voting

Approximately 32,950 Doña Ana County voters have cast ballots in-person or via absentee in the 2022 general election. Approximately 36,000 voters participated by this time in the 2018 general election.

Most of the county voters who took advantage of voting early were Democrats. Here's a look at number of early absentee and in-person voting by party:

  • 17,179 Democrats

  • 10,412 Republicans

  • 253 Libertarians

  • 90 Other

  • 5,016 decline to state (independents)

Voting on Election Day

Saturday, Nov. 5 was the final day to vote early. More than 40 voting sites in the county will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Any voter still in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote. Doña Ana County residents can go to any of the county's voting convenience centers to cast a ballot:

Returning an absentee ballot

If you requested an absentee ballot, it's too late to mail it back. However, absentee ballots can be submitted by 7 p.m. on Election Day at a secured container at one of these nine sites in Doña Ana County:

  • Sunland Park City Library, 1000 McNutt Rd. A., Sunland Park

  • Delores C. Wright Educational Center, 400 E. Lisa Dr., Chaparral

  • Hatch Valley High School, 170 E. Herrera Rd., Hatch

  • Corbett Center Student Union, 1600 International Mall on the New Mexico State University campus, Las Cruces

  • Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd., Las Cruces

  • Las Cruces City Hall, 700 N. Main St., Las Cruces

  • Sonoma Elementary School, 4201 Northrise Dr., Las Cruces

  • Mesilla Town Hall, 2231 Avenida de Mesilla, Mesilla

Voters may track the status of their absentee ballot online at NMVote.org.

Same-day voter registration

Same-day voter registration will be available at all Election Day locations. To register or update registration, take your New Mexico driver’s license or New Mexico identification card issued through the state's Motor Vehicle Division; or any document that contains an address in the county together with a photo identification card; or a current valid student photo identification card from a post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico accompanied by a current student fee statement that contains the student’s address in the county.

In Doña Ana County, 1,074 residents registered the same day they voted early. Here's a look at number of early same-day voting registrants by party:

  • 475 Democrats

  • 372 Republicans

  • 14 Libertarians

  • 3 Other

  • 210 decline to state (independents)

Where can I find results?

Unofficial results for this year’s general election will be available after 7 p.m. on Election Day at the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website: www.sos.state.nm.us. All results remain unofficial until after their certification by the state canvass board later in November.
