FOND DU LAC — Nearly 700 individuals participated in this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Fond du Lac County, held Oct. 7 at Moraine Park Technical College.

The walk, chaired by Penny Collin, Beth Atkinson Schultz, Pam Sippel and Dan Weidert, is anticipated to raise more than $115,000.

Money raised goes toward research and local services in Fond du Lac County and surrounding areas, including support groups, education, information and referral services, care and support, advocacy efforts and a 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a leading cause of death in the United States.

Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Donations can still be made to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s through Dec. 31 at act.alz.org/fonddulac. Mail-in donations can be sent to: Alzheimer’s Association, Attn: WTEA Fond du Lac County, WI, 12701 Whitewater Drive, Suite 290, Minnetonka, MN 55343.

Fond du Lac to flush water mains; start leaf collection

The bi-annual unidirectional water main flushing will begin Oct. 16 in the city of Fond du Lac.

Flushing will begin in the Northeast section Oct. 16; Southeast Oct. 17; Southwest and Northwest on Oct. 18 and 19.

Operations will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

Residents may notice discoloration in their water during flushing, but this is temporary and does not pose a health risk. Residents should not do laundry or use automatic ice machines until water runs clear in the tap. It also is advised to avoid running water while flushing is being done on your street.

Residents with issues after flushing should contact the city Water Utility at 920-322-3680.

Fond du Lac also will begin its annual leaf collection Oct. 16. Crews will begin in the northeast section of the city, proceeding clockwise. They typically make three rounds of the city through November, weather permitting.

A map showing the collection progress will be available on the city’s website, fdl.wi.gov. It will be updated toward the end of each workday.

To be collected, leaves should be raked in rows by the curb. Leaves in plastic bags will not be collected. Residents are reminded not to place leaves inside garbage carts. Fruit and vegetables will not be collected. Those items should be taken to the yard waste drop-off site.

Residents also may haul their leaves to the yard waste drop-off site at the Municipal Service Center, 530 Doty St. Bags must be emptied and disposed of properly.

Anyone who would like to receive full 7 cubic yard loads of leaves should contact the Municipal Service Center at 920-322-3544.

SSM Health hosts blood drive Oct. 17 at St. Agnes

SSM Health St. Agnes Hospital will hold a community blood drive from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Plaza Level Conference Center, 430 E. Division St., Fond du Lac. Appointments are encouraged.

Donors will get a choice of a gift card or bonus points to shop the ImpactLife rewards store. Donors should eat before donating and take a photo ID.

Help clear leaves during Rake for the Lake events

The Green Lake Association will host two Rake for the Lake events, Oct. 20 and 27.

The events will run 1 to 3 p.m. both days. The Oct. 20 event will be at Town Square Mill Pond Terrace, 492 Hill St., Green Lake, and the Oct. 27 event will be at The Village Green, 101 Seward St., Ripon.

Participants will learn how to keep phosphorus out of waterways by adopting lake-friendly lawn care practices, then work with fellow community members to help clear leaves from city streets and storm drains. The Public Works Department in each city will discuss their role in leaf management.

The first 100 people to register will receive a complimentary T-shirt. Hot chocolate and snacks will also be provided. All ages are welcome and should take a rake.

Indian Artifact Show is Oct. 22 in Monticello

The 44th Annual Native American Indian Artifact Show, hosted by Badger State Archaeological Society, will be Oct. 22. It will run 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rehmstedt gym, 334 S. Main St., Monticello.

The show was started by Ralph Hammerly, Paul Severson and James Beer, with only five tables. It has grown to more than 80 tables of artifacts on display or for sale, including points, stone, bone, copper artifacts, prints, books, pottery, jewelry, rugs and more.

Experts will on hand to identify artifacts brought in. Boy Scout Troop 106 will run a lunch stand.

There will be awards for best of show, best personal find, judge’s choice, and best educational display.

Admission is $2 for ages 14 and older.

Marian to honor local businesses at awards dinner

Marian University’s 42nd Annual Business and Industry Awards is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Marian University Stayer Center, 45 S. National Ave.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., followed by a program at 7 p.m. Master of Ceremonies is Dr. George Koonce, senior vice president of university relations at Marian.

The annual dinner honors local businesses for entrepreneurship, economic development, special achievement and commitment to community.

Hollnagel joins SSM Health Fond du Lac clinic

Theresa Hollnagel, a urology certified physician assistant, has joined SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic at 420 E. Division St. She is accepting patients.

As a certified physician assistant, Hollnagel treats diseases and malfunctions of the bladder, prostate and kidneys. She has a special interest in the treatment of kidney stones, prostate cancer, prostate gland enlargement, elevated PSA, male lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary retention and hematuria (blood in the urine).

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hollnagel is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Urological Association of Physician Assistants.
