Wethersfield students gravitate to Blackhawk dual credit courses

Wethersfield High School’s dual credit partnership with Black Hawk College is continuing to offer students the opportunity to get a jump start on their post secondary education while saving them and their parents on college tuition costs.

According to a report on the program released last week by Dist. 230 Supt. Andrew Brooks, Wethersfield juniors and seniors this fall have enrolled in a total of 20 classes taught at the high school, at Black Hawk’s nearby East Campus and at BHC's Welding and Skilled Trades Center in Kewanee. Classes also are being taught online by instructors both at BHC and Wethersfield High School.

Even though some students may be taking more than one dual credit course, total enrollment in the 20 classes stands at 63. Wethersfield’s high school enrollment this fall is 145.

Twenty-eight students are enrolled in five dual credit courses taught by teachers on site ranging from Civics to Resource Management. Thirty-one students are enrolled in 11 courses taught online by teachers at either WHS out BHC, including Math and Psychology 101, while four students are enrolled in four certificate courses at the East Campus or the Welding and Skilled Trades Center including Welding, Auto Mechanics and Accounting.

Brooks said 53 students are enrolled in band director Jay Hangman’s virtual Music Appreciation class this fall, including students from the Cambridge, Galva and AlWood school districts.

Five students have applied this fall for and received grants which are available to cover the cost of taking the courses based on need.

Jon Looney, a member of the Black Hawk College Board of Trustees from Kewanee, attended the meeting and said the college wants to partner with K-through-12 schools in its district on dual credit opportunities and said if there was anything officials could do to expand or improve the program, to let him know.
