'Who Needs an Australian Shepherd?' Basset Hound Takes the Reins to Herd Cattle

An unlikely basset hound mustered a group of fleeing calves on a farm in Callahan, Florida, on March 12.

Video recorded by Lowell Neely shows Buck, the basset hound, chase down the three roaming calves and herd them back towards the paddock gates. Neely shared the video on social media with the caption “who needs an Australian Shepherd when you have Buck?”

Neely told Storyful that despite his short legs, Buck is as willing as any farm dog.

“Buck is always trying to be the leader. He’s playing a little monkey see, monkey do when herding. Sometimes he gets a little confused when mustering and chases cattle the wrong way,” Neely said.

“The calves seen in the video missed the gate and were heading towards the road, that’s when Buck took control of the situation. We were chasing them down in a quad bike and he managed to beat us to the job and herd them back in before we could.” Credit: Lowell Neely via Storyful
