Needy Fund assists single mother with utility bills, food
Sometimes all you need is a little breathing room. That was the case for this single mother living with Lyme disease and being the sole provider for her disabled adult child.
After losing a parent and sibling in a short period, the woman, a service industry worker, felt overwhelmed trying to keep it all together.
Normally she worked a full schedule; however, during the COVID-19 pandemic, her once stable work became irregular and remained so throughout the offseason.
As the busy season approached, and her daughter in college would be home to contribute to living expenses in the summer, she figured she would be able to squeak through on her temporarily reduced income. However, with the increased costs of utilities, food and gas, her savings were quickly expended.
The Needy Fund, because of its generous donors, was able to provide assistance with utility bills and provide food vouchers, giving her the breathing room she needed to make it to the summer.

Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936. In 2022 the Needy Fund received more than 7,500 requests for assistance as of November and provided direct financial assistance to more than 4,000 clients.
No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the nonprofit pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.

Donations, which are tax-deductible, may be made at needyfund.org. Checks also can be made payable to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund and mailed to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
