Needy Fund helps Harwich mother with rent after work hours reduced
A single mom was thankful that she had the same apartment in Harwich for the past eight years, providing a home base for her and her two children, ages 8 and 11.
When the pandemic hit, however, her work hours as a certified nursing assistant were reduced and she had trouble keeping up with her bills.
She has been able to pick up shifts on a per diem basis at the nursing home/rehabilitation center where she trained 13 years ago as well as at a home health agency. Her family helps out with child care when she works weekends and overnight shifts.
She says it feels great to be working again and she loves her job providing care for elderly and sick patients.
She contacted the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund to ask for assistance with her rent. She was catching up on all the months she fell behind due to COVID and the reduction of her hours at work. She continually worried that getting behind on bills, especially rent, would lead to instability for her family.
“The Needy Fund financial assistance means a lot," she said. "Being in a situation that you cannot plan for and surviving on a paycheck-to-paycheck basis, it gives me hope to know that someone has my back when the times get tough.
"They have been kind, generous and non-judgmental. It’s so hard to ask for help, but they made it easier,” she said.
More about the Needy Fund
Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936.
No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the agency pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.

Donations, which are tax-deductible, may be made at needyfund.org. Checks also can be made payable to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund and mailed to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
