Needy fund helps single mother caring for 5 children with oil bill, mortgage
A single mother living with her four children and one grandchild contacted the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund for assistance with purchasing heating oil.
In order to keep her house warm, she borrowed $200, which she had set aside for her mortgage payment, to purchase 50 gallons of oil. That was the minimum the fuel company would supply.
As a certified home health aid working multiple jobs and traveling to homebound clients, her income was drastically reduced due the COVID-19 pandemic. Her schedule has become more sporadic and she has fewer clients. This hard-working woman, though, is determined to become certified as a CNA and secure work in a long-term care facility so she can have a more stable paycheck once again.
In the meantime, however, she needed urgent assistance with her mortgage to avoid losing her house. The Needy Fund was able to help her with a partial mortgage payment and a full oil tank so she would not have to worry about keeping her family warm and housed.
More about the Needy Fund
Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses since 1936. In 2022, the Needy Fund received more than 7,500 requests for assistance as of November and provided direct financial assistance to more than 4,000 clients.
No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the nonprofit pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.

Donations, which are tax-deductible, may be made at needyfund.org. Checks also can be made payable to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund and mailed to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
