Needy Fund helps young family keep their home
Many working families on the Cape rely on the spring and summer to make most of their yearly income. They save up during those months for winter, when the local economy slows. When the pandemic shut down businesses during the high season on the Cape, many families were financially squeezed.
One of those families is a young Mid-Cape couple, one of whom worked in retail, the other in trade. The shutdowns in 2020 and beyond meant that this couple had to juggle multiple worries: loss of affordable daycare for their 4-year-old, and the loss of work hours.
Even after the toughest stretch of the pandemic had passed and the economy started to reopen, their child’s daycare remained closed and their work hours were still reduced. To keep working, they had to rely on a more expensive daycare provider.
The young couple then found themselves behind on their mortgage.
After a request from the couple, the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund stepped in and helped with the mortgage, allowing them to keep their home. The couple was able to get back on their feet until their regular daycare provider reopened and the normal number of work hours resumed.
Many human service agencies offer assistance to those in need, but the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund has been helping since 1936 with a host of immediate, short-term emergencies such as food, rent, medical costs and other basic expenses.
No cash is given to Needy Fund recipients. Instead, the fund pays vendors through a voucher program. The case described above was provided by the Needy Fund on the condition of anonymity.
Donations, which are tax-deductible, may be made at needyfund.org. Checks can be made payable to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund and mailed to Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 36, Hyannis, MA 02601.
