Neenah Rotary presents service awards, scholarships and more news in your weekly dose
OSHKOSH - The Rotary Club of Neenah presented its club and community service awards recently, as well as scholarships, totaling more than $35,000, to students in the Neenah Joint School District.
Paul Reich and Michelle Dejno were both presented with the Jack W. Casper “Service Above Self” Community Service Award.
Dave Wollangk was presented with the Jack R. Grist club service award for his dedication to the club as a member.
Neenah Rotary STRIVE scholarships were presented to Jarvelle Crawford, Jayden East, Abigail Hill and Kalia Vanschindel, all Neenah High School seniors.
Rotary “Areas of Focus” scholarships are awarded to students who plan to pursue a career in one of Rotary International’s areas of focus: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies and protecting the environment. Scholarships were presented to Leah Kodama-Forget, Sophia Nedens and Keira Tech of Neenah High School and Shruti Chakrapani of St. Mary Catholic High School.
The Dan Johnson scholarship, in honor of a former Rotary Club of Neenah member, is awarded to students who have demonstrated academic achievement, community involvement and high moral character. Scholarships were presented to Alayna Birch, Neenah High School, and Chloe Vogel, St. Mary Catholic High School.
The Jack Casper “Service Above Self” scholarship is presented in honor of former Neenah Rotarian Jack Casper. Recipients are nominated by their high school and selected by a panel of club members. This year’s recipients are Parker DeDecker of Neenah High School and Shruti Chakrapani and Maria Argueta of St. Mary Catholic High Schools.

ThedaCare's bariatric program recognized for quality care
The ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah Bariatric Program and Surgical Associates of Neenah are being recognized for their high-quality care.
Optum has recertified ThedaCare as a Bariatric Center of Excellence and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association has named ThedaCare a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Kevin Wasco, co-medical director of ThedaCare Bariatric Surgery, is one of three surgeons with the program. Weight loss specialists, Dr. Hassanain Jassim and Dr. Raymond Georgen, also met the requirements for the awards in both expertise and cost efficiency. Drs. Jassim and Georgen are part of Surgical Associates of Neenah.
ThedaCare’s Bariatric Program has received both honors since 2010.
Red Cross hosts blood drives to boost local supply
The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help boost the local blood supply after months of declining donations. Especially needed are type O negative, type O positive and type B negative blood donors as well as platelet donors.
A blood drive will be held from 11:45 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at Algoma United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh. Donors will need to provide a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of ID at check-in. To donate, individuals must be 17 or older, in general good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Oshkosh library shares upcoming events
Upcoming Oshkosh Public Library programs include comics and an adult DIY.
The Aug. 5 Stay and Play Saturday will be on DIY Music Makers. The group will meet 10 a.m. to noon on the lower level. Kids and their adult can take part in self-led activities, games and projects.
A Comic Creation Round Table Discussion for adults will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7. The group will meet under the dome. Hear from professionals as they share their work and answer questions.
This month’s adults' DIY is a handmade notepad. Meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 8 on the lower level. Registration is required at 920-236-5205. Those who wish to craft at home can pick up the free kit at the second-floor service desk. Available while supplies last.

Garden Club to meet Aug. 10 for tour and potluck
The next meeting of the Oshkosh Garden Club will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 10. The group will tour the garden of Petey and Curt Clark, 1680 Rasmussen Road, Oshkosh.
Those who attend are welcome to take a chair and snack if they wish to stay for the 6 p.m. potluck and meeting.
Award-winning singer Jason Moon to perform in Oshkosh
Award-winning singer/songwriter Jason Moon will perform in concert 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Jockey Club, 24 E. Gruenwald Ave., Oshkosh.
In addition to being a singer/songwriter, Moon is an Iraq War veteran and director of the non-profit Warrior Songs.
Warrior Songs is dedicated to helping veterans recover from trauma through music and other creative arts. The nonprofit is offering a free four-day retreat for Vietnam veterans suffering from PTSD. It will be Dec. 13 to 17 at the Siena Center in Racine.
The group also is working on “BIPOC Veterans: Warrior Songs Vol. 4-6.” The compilation will explore the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color veterans.

Plexus to host this year's Smart Girls Rock! event
Fox Cities Chamber will hold the 2023 Smart Girls Rock! at Plexus, 2444 Schultz Drive, Neenah. The event will take place Nov. 1.
The program is geared toward girls interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) industries learn what it takes to pursue that type of career.
Plexus products range from life-saving medical devices and mission-critical aerospace and defense products to industrial automation systems and semiconductor capital equipment.
Around 100 female students in eighth through 12th grade will attend the event.

Wisconsin Herd hosts inaugural golf outing for local nonprofits
The inaugural Wisconsin Herd Golf Outing will be Aug. 30 at Lake Breeze Golf Course. There also is a silent auction taking place online until Aug. 31. Proceeds will benefit local nonprofits.
Lake Breeze Golf Course is at 633 Ball Prairie Road, Winneconne. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. A dinner and awards ceremony follow.
Register as an individual or foursome. Each golfer will receive 18 holes, golf cart access, lunch, dinner, a $50 Wisconsin Herd Pro Shop gift card and one ticket to a Wisconsin Herd home game for the 2023-24 season.
