Neenah school district sells Roosevelt Elementary School on Doty Island to CEO of Bergstrom Automotive

Students arrive for the first day of school at Tullar Elementary School on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020, in Neenah, Wis.

NEENAH - Local businessman John Bergstrom will be the new owner of the Roosevelt Elementary School property on Forest Avenue in Neenah.

On Tuesday, the Neenah Joint School District board voted 6 to 2 with one member abstaining from the vote to sell the property to Bergstrom, CEO of Bergstrom Automotive, for $1 million.

Four offers were made to purchase the property, but the board decided on Bergstrom's offer since it was the only cash offer and the only one without any contingencies.

In December, the district voted to close the 100-year-old Roosevelt school — its only school on Doty Island — at the end of the 2022-23 school year because of low enrollment and infrastructure challenges related to the building's age.

Little discussion about it was done by the board Tuesday since it had been discussed at previous meetings, including during a closed session.

However, a few questions were raised about the date that Bergstrom would take over ownership of the property. Ultimately, the board kept the ownership takeover date for Aug. 1.

The board didn't take action on it Tuesday night, but there was an update on the sale of 15.7 acres of property the district owns on Jacobsen Road in Fox Crossing.

That property was purchased more than 50 years ago with the potential of housing an elementary school, but the district instead decided to put it up for sale, according to a newsletter sent by the district last week.

The offer on the table is for $450,000, which is about $100,000 shy of what the district listed it for, based on documents available on the board's public document website.

The board will vote on the sale of that land at its Nov. 1 meeting.
