But much like the athletes, the competition’s future is up in the air.

Volusia County and the National Cheer Association are in the middle of contract negotiations that could lead to the end of a decades-long legacy.

NCA Senior Vice President Bill Boggs said he hopes that doesn’t happen.

“We had a meeting here, and we had a lot of important people in the meeting,” he said. “And I told them, ‘If you don’t want us, we will leave. but that’s not what we want to do.’”

Hotel availability has been an issue for years, and Hurricanes Ian and Nicole only made it worse, Boggs said.

The Plaza Hotel and Space, which typically provides more than 500 rooms for the event hasn’t reopened yet.

“We hit record numbers last year, We had about 350 teams and we have 430 this year,” Boggs said. “I had to send an email to 155 teams telling them we did not have hotel rooms for them.”

Navarro College coach Monica Aldama said her team’s entire season is centered around Daytona Beach, and not competing here would be a huge loss.

“In our music, it says, ‘Take me to the water,’ and we are pointing right over to the water, so I just can’t imagine it not being here,” Aldama said.
