Neighbor arrested after 4 people found fatally shot in Idaho home, officials say

Four people are dead after law enforcement said a neighbor fatally shot them inside a northern Idaho home over the weekend.

According to the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office, deputies and officers with the Kellogg Police Department responded to a home for a report of a shooting in the city of Kellogg, near the Coeur d'Alene National Forest about 36 miles southeast of Coeur d'Alene, near Interstate 90.

All four victims suffered fatal gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office reported, and a suspect was detained.

In a news release issued Monday by Idaho State Police, troopers said the suspect, a 31-year-old neighbor of the victims, was booked into a local jail on multiple counts of murder.

As of Tuesday, law enforcement had not released the suspect's name.

"Neither the relationships between the parties nor the suspect’s motive will be confirmed by law enforcement until after the initial court appearance when records become available through the courts," the release said.

Neither troopers, the sheriff's office or Kellogg police could immediately be reached for comment by USA TODAY Tuesday morning.

Motive in slayings remains under investigation

In the release, troopers wrote they were still investigating the slayings.

“This is a tragic situation that will affect the Kellogg community. Detectives continue working to establish a timeline and what led to the shooting,” Lt. Paul Berger, a detective with state police, said in the news release.

After the shooting, crime scene tape blocked off a portion of an apartment complex in Kellogg, KXLY-TV reported. The shooting occurred at multi-dwelling units behind the Mountain View Congregational Church on Sunday, The Shoshone News-Press reported on the newspaper's Facebook page.
