Neighbors concerned over possible safe parking site for homeless

City leaders continue to look for sites in Sacramento that could provide safe spaces for people experiencing homelessness both in the short-term and the long term. One of the sites that may be under consideration has generated questions and concerns from neighbors. City Council Member Katie Valenzuela said her office started having conversations with city staff to determine the feasibility of turning the solar-panel-covered parking lot at Sutter's Landing in East Sacramento into a safe parking site for people who are living out of their cars or RVs. The parking lot is near a bike trail that provides access to the American River, a dog park and basketball courts, and some living nearby think it is a bad idea. People expressed concerns that it would attract crime or cause trash to accumulate in the area. Valenzuela said the idea is far from a done deal.
