Neighbors say grocery stores look like a zoo as locals prep for Hurricane Ian

With the tropics heating up, it’s time to make sure you’re ready. Action News Jax continues our team coverage from the southside where residents called grocery stores around town a zoo.

Hundreds of locals were out today trying to make sure they had everything they needed for when Hurricane Ian makes landfall. Just take a look at Walmart’s parking lot on Beach Boulevard. It’s packed.

One of our first stops was Costco.

“Some people are just, they’ve left their manners at home which is very sad to me. Were all in this together and it would be nice if everyone could just be kind and make room,” Rebecca Gregory said.

Neighbors around Jax say the one thing scarier than Hurricane Ian is the attitudes they’re getting from other shoppers.

“I pulled in and I was like, it’s Monday at 11. When you went in there what does it look like inside? It’s crazy, the line to check out is almost to the back of the store,” Shannon Walker said.

“If you’re having to cross an isle it’s not as if inside those lanes there marked with arrows and were all trying to do the same thing and that’s to protect our homes and families,” Rebecca Gregory said.

Shoppers say everyone is low on water or in the middle of restocking it.

“We have sandbags, we have quick dams sold at Home Depot,” Rebecca Gregory said.

Besides food and water, make sure you have an emergency medicine supply stocked with a first aid kit and at least a 3 day supply of your medications.

Plus, an extra stash of clothing, bedding and towels. Have tools and emergency supplies like adjustable wrenches and screws and batteries and portable chargers too.

And finally, have important family documents secured in Ziploc bags to keep them safe from water damage.

One last tidbit. Preparing for Hurricane Ian is going to cost a bit of money so please make sure you also have some cash set aside.
